Canada Disability Benefit: FAQs and our latest advocacy messages to the federal government

In July 2025, first payments are scheduled to begin for a new federal income supplement, available to qualifying people with disabilities across Canada.

Called the “Canada Disability Benefit” (CDB), this new program will provide up to $200 a month to working-aged Canadians with disabilities. This includes people with mental health and/or substance use health-related impairments, who meet the eligibility criteria for the CDB.

To share important information with people we serve who may qualify for the benefit, and as a resource for our staff, the national office of the Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA) has prepared a frequently-asked-questions fact sheet about the CDB.

If there’s a question we haven’t answered or you want to share your thoughts on government benefits for people with disabilities/mental health conditions, please reach out to us at [email protected]

CMHA’s national office also submitted a list of recommendations to the federal government about ways to strengthen the benefit, in order for it to better serve people with mental health and/or substance-use related disabilities, as part of an official consultation process that closed last month.
