CMHA BC Stands in Solidarity with the Tumbler Ridge Community Following Tragic Events
Feb 12, 2026
We want to add our deep condolences following the terrible events in Tumbler Ridge on Tuesday. We are hopeful that survivors and people who lost family and friends will receive the mental health supports they need to deal with their experience and their grief.
Please refer to the CMHA BC Division statement for links to accessible resources in British Columbia.
The Canadian Mental Health Association, BC Division, together with our 14 local branches serving communities across the province, is shocked and deeply saddened by the tragic and deeply distressing events that occurred on February 10 in Tumbler Ridge.
Our hearts are with all those who have lost loved ones, those who have been injured, and everyone impacted by this act of violence. We extend our deepest condolences to families, friends, students, educators, first responders, and community members whose lives have been profoundly affected.
We stand in solidarity with the Tumbler Ridge community during this unimaginable time of grief. We also recognize that tragedies like this can reverberate far beyond one community. Many people across British Columbia may be experiencing grief, fear, shock, distress, or a sense of lost safety in the wake of this event, even if they are not directly connected. These responses are natural, and support is available.
In these early moments following such a devastating incident, it is important to be cautious about drawing conclusions regarding mental illness and violence. Most people living with mental health challenges are rarely violent and are, in fact, far more likely to be victims of violence themselves. As conversations unfold in the days ahead, we urge care, compassion, and responsibility, focusing on supporting those affected while avoiding language or assumptions that reinforce harmful stigma.
No one should have to face grief or distress alone. We encourage anyone who is struggling, or who is concerned about a loved one, to reach out for support.
