CMHA Recognizes Human Rights Day

Human Rights Day is observed every December 10th on the anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. This year, CMHA joins the world in celebrating the 70th anniversary of the Declaration.

Equality. Justice. Freedom. Human dignity. These are the foundations of the Universal Declaration of Rights, the fundamental rights to which everyone is entitled as a human being.

These rights, and our need to speak out for them, are as relevant today as when first declared in 1948. At CMHA, we emphasize that our rights as human beings include the right to safe and secure housing, to employment, to adequate financial resources and to be included in our society. We are entitled to the resources that make good mental health possible and Article 25 (1) lays this out clearly:

Everyone has the right to a standard of living adequate for the health and well-being of himself and of his family, including food, clothing, housing and medical care and necessary social services.

Article 25 goes on to say that, as human beings, we must enjoy the right to security, regardless of any sickness or disability.

Human Rights Day reminds the citizens of the world to stand up for our rights and for the rights of others. These rights must always include people with mental illnesses. Today, join CMHA and #StandUp4HumanRights.
