Canada Disability Benefit: FAQs and our latest advocacy messages to the federal government

Starting in July 2025, people with disabilities across Canada can apply to receive a new federal income supplement.

Called the “Canada Disability Benefit” (CDB), this new program will provide up to $200 a month to eligible working-aged Canadians with disabilities. This includes people with mental health and/or substance use health-related impairments who meet the eligibility criteria for the CDB.

Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA) prepared a factsheet to assist people who want to apply for the CDB. This was updated in July 2025.

Please note that to be eligible, you need to have a Disability Tax Credit (DTC) certificate. Read our factsheet for more information or visit Canada.ca

CMHA’s national office submitted a list of recommendations to the federal government about ways to strengthen the benefit so it better serve people with mental health and/or substance-use related disabilities.
